Star course
Taster

A taster session is a good way to find out how easy and fun kayaking or canoeing is before you go on an Introductory course
Start Canoeing/Kayaking - BCU 1 Star

An Introductory course will include basic boat handling and the essential background knowledge. You will learn how to paddle and steer around a figure of eight course, how to paddle backwards and stop and what to do when the boat capsizes. There will be plenty of fun and games which usually involves getting wet. Following this course you can attend Practice Sessions.

Practice Sessions Pre-requisite: BCU 1 Star

During a Practice Session you can do a number of things. You can practice or complete skills learnt on the 1 Star course, get back on the water if you have not been in a boat for a while or try a different type of boat and have lots of fun.

Improving Techniques - BCU 2 Star

The course will start by re-capping on the skills learnt on the BCU 1 Star course and then build on these basic skills to develop your ability. In addition you will also learn the essential skills of how to prevent a capsize, moving the kayak sideways and the eskimo rescue.

One river trip must be completed before the 2 Star can be awarded.

To continue paddling after this course you can attend Practice Sessions, River Trips, the Kayak Whitewater Expedition or join a club.

River Trips

Pre-requisite: BCU 1 Star or 2 Star

Going on a River Trip involves taking boats from the centre to a river, which could be the Thames, Wye or the Avon. The group, with two instructors paddles downstream usually with a short stop for lunch.

The length of the trips varies from 2 to 6 miles, depending on whether it's a 1 Star or 2 Star pre-requisite.
